Down by 14 in the fourth quarter, the Junipero Serra High School Padres from San Mateo scored twice to tie Concord’s De La Salle High School Spartans at 21 at Owen Owens Field in Concord on Saturday.
A Serra interception with minutes left, set up Dylan Joudieh’s winning field goal with 2 seconds remaining on the clock giving the Padre’s their first win over the Northern California powerhouse Spartans.
With Serra’s 17-12 win over the Folsom High School Bulldogs last week, the Padres are in Northern California’s top spot going into this week’s game against the Central Catholic High School Raiders of Modesto.
De La Salle will face the Saint Francis High School Lancers of Mountain View, the team that last year gave the Spartans their first Northern California school loss in 30 years.
The Spartans previous loss was to the Pittsburg High School Pirates in the 1991 California Interscholastic Federation North Coast Section championship game.
