Eight candidates were certified Tuesday for the June 29 special election ballot to fill the District 18 Assembly seat left vacant when incumbent Rob Bonta was nominated to be state Attorney General by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Candidates certified by Secretary of State Shirley Weber, with party affiliation, are San Leandro School Board member James Aguilar, Democrat; San Leandro Vice Mayor Victor Aguilar, Democrat; Alameda Unified School District board President Mia Bonta Democrat; public health professional Eugene Canson, Democrat; social justice attorney Janani Ramachandran, Democrat; Alameda Vice Mayor Malia Vella, Democrat; electrical engineer Stephen Slauson, Republican; and retail worker Joel Britton, no party preference.

The Assembly district covers most of Oakland, along with Alameda and San Leandro.

Candidate Mia Bonta is the wife of Rob Bonta, who had held the seat since 2012.
