A Dublin Unified School District board trustee died this week after she was struck Wednesday morning while standing between two vehicles at Fallon Middle School, Dublin police said.
The department said it was “heartbroken” to report the death of district Trustee Catherine Kuo, 48.
The accident was reported at 11:45 a.m. at the school at 3601 Kohnen Way.
Kuo was standing behind a vehicle that struck her from behind and pinned her to another vehicle, police said.
Firefighters and paramedics treated Kuo before she was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where she later died.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police said alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor.
The district’s interim Superintendent Daniel Moirao called her death “a tragedy beyond words” in a message to the school community.
He said Kuo had been “volunteering at a food distribution event on campus.”
Moirao described her as a “mother of two, loving wife, dedicated community member and school board trustee.”
“She was friendly, nurturing, kind, and generous,” he said. “We were lucky to have known her and will miss her more than words can express. There is a gaping hole in our hearts. Our schools, students, staff, and families are forever indebted to her.”
Kuo was elected to the Area 3 seat on the board in a 2019 special election. She was currently serving a full term lasting until 2024.
“She was born in Redwood City to Korean immigrant parents, grew up in Saratoga, CA, and went on to attend UCLA where she graduated with a BA in psychology,” according to the school district website.
A GoFundMe fundraiser to benefit Kuo’s family had reached more than two-thirds of its $100,000 goal as of Thursday night. A candlelight vigil in her memory is planned for Sunday evening in Dublin, according to the site.
