A rising senior at Saratoga High School has been selected to study Mandarin this summer in Chengdu, China, with a full scholarship from the U.S. State Department.

Shivam Mani is the first student from the school to be selected for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth, and was chosen from a pool of over 3,300 applicants, according to the program.

He’s among 660 students who will study Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Persian, Russian or Turkish in the coming year.

Mani will live with a host family in Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province, experience local culture and receive formal language lessons.
