SF producer offers an AR tour of the enslaved South Carolina community that was freed in 1861

Walking Cinema’s Free and Equal Project explores the Port Royal Experiment, considered a “rehearsal for Reconstruction.” Seven months after the start of the U.S. Civil War in 1861, the Union Army freed enslaved peoples in the Sea Islands, South Carolina, and the U.S. began experimenting with giving Black people property and voting rights there.
