Bay Area Kwanzaa events focus on the ‘unity’ in ‘community’

Seven principles – Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith) – celebrated over a period of seven days, with each day and principle equally significant. These principles are the foundation of Kwanzaa, an African American culture- and community-focused holiday celebrated from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1.
