A Santa Cruz deputy police chief has been tabbed to serve as the department’s interim chief in late October, city officials announced Wednesday. Deputy Chief Jose Garcia was appointed by City Manager Matt Huffaker to serve as interim chief starting Oct. 31 following the retirement of current Chief Bernie Escalante.
