Civic Engagement: How You Can Get Involved
Communities are healthier when people are engaged, involved and active — in a variety of ways. It could mean learning, voting, volunteering, attending, responding or sharing your views, expertise and skills. Here are a few ways to stay informed, act out and speak up.
First Amendment Resources
The First Amendment Coalition, based in the Bay Area but covering all of California, protects and promotes a free press, freedom of expression, and the people’s right to know.
Use their Legal Hotline, which gives users free access to FAC’s experts for questions about access to public records, public meetings and a range of First Amendment topics.
Consult their Asked & Answered collection of FAQs, a searchable database of questions posed by users about their rights under open government laws, and First Amendment safeguards that have been answered by FAC’s attorneys.
Read their handbooks for guidance on California’s primary freedom-of-information laws. They include a California Public Records Act Primer, field guides on police shootings and immigration enforcement, explanations about the state’s open meetings laws, and a FOIA sample request letter.
