In Oakland, Calif. shocking video images and recent reports of assaults on people of Asian descent in Chinatown have unnerved merchants and residents.
Shop owners have been targeted as have pedestrians, even older people, apparently picked at random. The attacks have happened not only at night but often during the day.
While the police department beefs up patrols, individuals and groups have volunteered to escort people who may be afraid to venture out and have established a presence in Chinatown to deter the violence.
