Hospitals across the United States, facing a dire shortage of protective medical equipment during the coronavirus pandemic, have found help from an unusual source — a small auto shop based in Fremont.

But the shop’s international supply chain became a lifeline in early March when a supplier in China told company president Javad Shadzi that a nearby Chinese pharmacy materials company had access to protective masks.
