A second man who died while canoeing on Tomales Bay over the weekend has been identified as a 37-year-old Pacifica resident.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Alexander Ferguson was found unresponsive in the water by the U.S. Coast Guard and was transported to Bodega Bay, where he was declared dead.

Ferguson was with Casey Flynn Melia, 36, when they left their campsite on the bay in a canoe on Saturday just before midnight.

Fire officials said the pair had left to view bioluminescence in Tomales Bay, a narrow ocean inlet that separates the Point Reyes peninsula from the rest of Marin County.

When they didn’t return the following morning to their camp at White Gulch Beach, members of their camping group alerted authorities.

Melia was found unresponsive on Sunday near Hog Island, a small island in Tomales Bay. He was recovered by the National Park Service and brought to Sacramento Landing in Marin County, where first responders pronounced him dead.

The official cause of death and toxicology report for Melia will be handled by the Marin County Coroner’s Office, while the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office will handle Ferguson’s case.
