Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and other officials on Jan. 6 introduced the first permanent chief of the city’s Department of Violence Prevention, which will aim to reverse a 7 percent increase in violent crime in Oakland from 2018 to 2019.
The 2019 data show that there were about 400 more cases of violent crimes and seven more homicides compared with the previous year.
