Staff and volunteers at the Monument Crisis Center in Concord were shocked Monday morning to find that the nonprofit’s pickup truck had been stolen from their front entrance.
The center relies on the truck as its only means of delivering donated food, diapers and other necessities to community members.
“It’s really integral to everything that we do,” said the center’s Executive Director Daniel Scherer.
The nonprofit serves around 35,000 low-income clients each year through its food distribution program, using the truck to coordinate food drives. The center’s planned biweekly food distribution in Pittsburg on Thursday may be canceled if they cannot find a truck to rent before then.
“We have to have our vehicle to be able to serve all those people,” Scherer said.
The pickup is a 22-year-old 2004 Ford F-350, donated to the center in 2016 after its previous truck was also stolen. The center is planning to seek grants and donations to replace it.
“We’re going to need it for our operations, but they’re just so, so expensive,” Scherer said.
According to Scherer, the Concord Police Department is investigating the theft. Concord police officials didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
