South Vallejo resident Jorge Ramirez woke up at 1 a.m. on May 24 to see flames leaping into the sky as an abandoned elementary school burned down near his home.
Almost two months later, the former Grant School remains a heap of burnt rubble surrounded by fences and signs warning of asbestos. After the fire, Vallejo City Unified School District workers found the site posed an immediate threat to public health and safety.
