U.S. House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi was accused of hitting a parked car and driving away from the scene in the Town of Yountville on Friday, according to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

The alleged hit and run happened at about 2:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of Yount Street when a person driving a brown convertible allegedly struck an unoccupied parked vehicle and drove off. The parked car sustained serious rear end damage and its wheels were pushed onto the curb from the impact, according to Henry Wofford, a spokesperson for the Sherriff’s Office.

The brown convertible was found shortly after by the California Highway Patrol on Yountville Cross Road, where it was parked partially blocking the road, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the convertible had sustained “significant” front-end damage and was driven until it became disabled.

The driver was identified as 86-year-old Paul Pelosi, a prominent venture capitalist and congressional spouse who founded the San Francisco-based firm Financial Leasing Services Inc.

He allegedly told law enforcement that he was aware he had hit something but was unsure of what. A field sobriety test, including a breathalyzer, cleared him of driving under the influence, Wofford said.

Wofford said the Sheriff’s Office will recommend hit and run charges to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, which will likely review the case Monday. Paul Pelosi was not arrested, which Wofford said was common for suspected misdemeanor hit and run where nobody was injured.

In a widely reported case, Paul Pelosi was attacked in the residence he and the congresswoman share in San Francisco in October 2022 and suffered a fractured skull. The attacker was convicted of assault and attempted kidnapping in 2024.

Paul Pelosi’s license was referred to the DMV for reevaluation under a program meant for elderly drivers, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He previously pleaded guilty to driving under the influence causing injury in Napa County in 2022.

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi did not respond to a request for comment sent to her congressional office on Saturday, which was the Fourth of July.

On Monday, a spokesperson for the Pelosi family said in an email that Paul had apologized to the other vehicle’s owner and that the congresswoman would not be commenting further.

“Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle. Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter,” the family’s spokesperson wrote.
