Residential burn permits are now required in six Northern California counties, after the rule took effect May 1, fire officials said.
The CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit said permits are now mandatory in Sonoma, Napa, Lake, Solano, Yolo and Colusa counties.
Permits can be obtained online by completing a short educational video and application process designed to promote safe burning practices and reduce the risk of fires escaping, according to CAL FIRE.
Permits are free, must be renewed annually, and can be stored either digitally or as a printed copy. They apply only to areas under CAL FIRE jurisdiction or within the State Responsibility Area.
Residents outside those areas are advised to contact local fire authorities and air quality districts for specific requirements, fire officials said.
In Lake County, residents must also secure an additional permit through the local Air Quality Management District and comply with a burn ban that takes effect May 1 each year.
CAL FIRE officials reminded property owners to check daily burn conditions with their local air districts before conducting any burns.
Safety guidelines require a minimum 10-foot clearance around burn piles, access to water and tools, and adult supervision at all times.
Failure to follow regulations may result in citations or fines, fire officials said.
