The Contra Costa Water District Board of Directors decided this week to fill a vacancy for the Division 2 representative by appointment rather than special election.
Candidates can apply online to be considered and must live in the district, which includes Pleasant Hill, Martinez, Port Costa, and a portion of the city of Concord.
The seat was vacated by Director John Burgh, who announced his retirement in February after serving on the Board of Directors since 2004.
Applications are available at ccwater.com/907 and must be received by 5 p.m. on April 2.
Applicants can also drop off or mail forms to the District Center Building, 1331 Concord Avenue, Concord, CA 94520. Those must also be received by the 5 p.m. deadline.
Candidates will be reviewed, and those selected for interviews will be notified by April 17. Those selected will make presentations at a special meeting of the Water District Board of Directors on April 22.
The candidate who is chosen will be announced at the Water District Board’s meeting on May 13. They will serve until the seat is again filled during the general election in November.
Burgh will serve through the end of March. He said in a statement announcing his retirement that the decision was not easy, but that he felt the Water District was on a solid fiscal path and that it was time to make way for a new generation of leadership.
The Contra Costa Water District serves about 550,000 customers in northern Contra Costa County, according to its website.
