Ground was broken Saturday on a $3.5 million project to renovate East Oakland’s Tyrone Carney Park.
New features in the half-acre park will include four play areas, two fitness equipment areas, paved walking paths and a circular central plaza with ornamental paving, the city said in a news release.
The park is named for Tyrone Carney of Oakland, a U.S. Marine who was killed in Vietnam on June 9, 1968, at the age of 20. He was active in organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America and Youth for Christ prior to his military service, according to city officials.
“Tyrone Carney’s legacy is an important part of this community’s history,” Fred Kelley, director of Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development, said in the news release. “The park will provide a beautiful place for our kids to play, and for Mr. Carney’s loved ones to gather, honor his memory, and celebrate the values of courage, service, and unity that he embodied.”
