The Newark Police Department is warning residents about individuals posing as landscapers or utility workers who knock on doors and commit residential burglaries when no one answers.
“In some cases, these suspects have been seen driving a moving company truck and are active at various times of the day,” the department said in an advisory Thursday.
According to police, these scammers often wear high-visibility vests. Residents are urged to take precautions, including not opening the door to strangers but making it clear someone is home by speaking through the door. They also advise monitoring security cameras and checking alerts promptly when away from home.
Other safety tips include locking all doors and windows before leaving or going to bed, verifying with the utility company if someone claims to be from them, and considering the formation of a neighborhood watch group to improve safety and communication.
Newark police offer Vacation Home Checks, which residents can sign up for through the department’s website.
Residents are urged to report suspicious activity immediately to police. For emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call 510-578-4237.
