San Jose Councilmember Peter Ortiz is calling for greater transparency and stronger oversight after Alum Rock Union School District abruptly fired its superintendent without explanation.
The East San Jose district’s board of trustees voted Thursday to fire Superintendent German Cerda, who took over in September. It was the second leadership change in just over a year.
“As our families prepare to send their children back to school, many are left with rightful questions,” Ortiz, who represents District 5, said Friday in a press release. “They deserve clarity, stability, and reassurance that their students’education and well-being are being prioritized.”
Ortiz said he will attend a special board meeting scheduled for Saturday to advocate for clear next steps “and a steady hand during this time of transition.”
Ortiz, a former trustee with the Santa Clara County Board of Education, said an in-person meeting is needed between the county panel, the Alum Rock district, the City Council and the California Department of Education.
“The city has a vested interest in the success of East Side children, and that’s why collaboration across all levels is critical,” he said.
