Napa County officials have agreed to purchase an 874-acre parkland in a $7.26 million deal.
According to the county, the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday authorized the acquisition of Skyline Wilderness Park, which will become part of the county’s park system.
The transaction is expected to close in March 2025.
The park, located east of the city of Napa, features 25 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, with native plants and wildlife.
Since 1980, the county leased the property from the state for public open space. State Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, authored legislation in 2019 to authorize the sale of the property to the county.
Under the agreement, Napa County will have responsibility for park maintenance, water rights, and necessary repairs.
“Today marks the culmination of the efforts of so many who have helped to secure Skyline’s preservation and all it offers to the community for generations to come,” Board of Supervisors chair Joelle Gallagher said Tuesday. “With local control, we can ensure Skyline thrives as a space for recreation, and a place for residents and visitors to reconnect with nature.”
The county is in the process of purchasing from the state the 80-acre Camp Coombs property, a former area of Napa State Hospital, and add it to the Skyline Wilderness Park. The Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the deal in 2025, county officials said.
