With the filing period set to close in the coming days, eight individuals so far have pulled papers for three seats on the Brentwood City Council.
Those hoping to secure positions for mayor or District 1 and District 3 councilmembers have until Friday. However, that date could possibly be extended to Aug. 14.
The three individuals who have pulled papers for the mayor’s position — soon to be vacated by Mayor Joel Bryant — all have experience with the city of Brentwood.
Susannah Meyer currently sits on the City Council as vice mayor and represents District 3. Gerald Johnson’s term on the Planning Commission expires Dec. 31, 2025. And Steve Kersevan is a soon-to-be-retired Brentwood city staffer with the engineering department. Kersevan has pulled papers for both mayor and District 3.
Meyer is the only one of the three to have returned her candidate paperwork and been qualified for the election as of Tuesday.
“I’ve been honored to serve as long as I have. It’s been almost four years now, and I think we’ve done a lot,” said Meyer. “We’ve accomplished some really great things for the residents, but there’s still more work to do. And I can’t wait to get started.”
For District 1, Anita Roberts and Faye Maloney have pulled papers, but neither have qualified yet. Roberts is currently the chairperson for the city’s Planning Commission with a term set to expire alongside Johnson’s. Maloney, a Hayward Police Department sergeant, previously ran for the seat in 2020.
Of the three who pulled papers, the only qualified candidate for the District 3 seat is current City Councilmember Jovita Mendoza, who will finish her term for District 1 this November. Mendoza was elected prior to the redistricting of 2022, which changed the boundary lines for the city’s four districts. Upon finishing her term this November, she is no longer able to run for District 1, as her home is now considered part of District 3.
The other two who pulled papers for District 3 are Kersevan and Brian Oftedal, a fire captain for the Oakland Fire Department and commissioner for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
