The Oakland Housing Authority has announced the completion of 181 new affordable housing units in the Casa Sueños building in the Fruitvale Transit Village.

The units are intended for low-income working families and essential workers.

“This village represents a collective of all diversity, all peoples, all incomes, all flavors of culture, on sacred land to honor sacred legacy to empower sacred futures,” Oakland Housing Authority executive director Patricia Wells said. “That’s what Casa Sueños realizes today.”

Casa Sueños is part of the Fruitvale Transit Village development near the Fruitvale BART station, intended to be a mixed-income, mixed-use, transit-oriented development, according to a press release this week. The project is a joint venture between the city of Oakland, Alameda County and federal and nonprofit partners.

Oakland Housing Authority plans to subsidize 75 of the building’s units through project-based vouchers, investing almost $40 million over the next 20 years, according to the press release.

Casa Sueños also has about 7,500 square feet of commercial space operated by local nonprofit Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice.
