With a critically important election approaching in November, getting out the vote is more important than ever — and the Music & Dance Climate VoteFest in Berkeley on Tuesday aims to make it as entertaining as possible.
A Grateful Dead jam band, bluegrass musicians, fiddlers and dancers will rock out and citizen activists will share ways to work for environmental justice and get out the vote Tuesday night at the Freight & Salvage club in the downtown Berkeley arts district.
Musical performers include fiddler Laurie Lewis with guitarist Nina Gerber, Teo Quale and Ian Ly of Crying Uncle Bluegrass and the vocal harmonies of Sweet Sally. Grown Women Dance Collective will also perform.
In between performances, representatives of local organizations will give brief talks on to how to work for environmental justice and get out the vote for the 2024 election. These organizations will also have materials and spokespeople available at tables during the event.
Organizations on hand include the Bay Area Coalition, Citizens’ Climate Lobby Alameda, the ClimateMusic Project, the Tuolumne River Trust and Fossil Free California.
VoteFest is sponsored by elder-led groups including Third Act SF Bay Area, an organization for people over 60 focused on preserving the climate and protecting democracy, Great Old Broads for Wilderness and Grown Women Dance Collective.
The event is wheelchair accessible, with ASL interpretation. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, available at TheFreight.org. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Freight & Salvage, 2020 Addison St, Berkeley.
