Stockton police have announced that the department will be holding a gun buyback event later this month to offer cash gift cards for firearms.

The event is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 20 at 425 N. Edison St., where people can receive $200 or $400 gift cards, depending on the type of firearm, police said.

Participants will not be required to provide their personal identification to turn in their guns, but must bring them unloaded and in the trunk of their vehicle, then remain in their car and follow the guidance of Stockton police.

No money will be given for non-operable firearms, though they will still be accepted for destruction if brought, according to police.

The department said in a statement that the event is “part of our gun violence reduction strategy through responsible gun ownership.”
