The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is one step closer to having independent oversight after the county Board of Supervisors approved the creation of an inspector general position.
A state law passed in 2020, Assembly Bill 1185, authorized counties to create inspectors general and/or citizens advisory panels with subpoena power to provide oversight of county sheriff’s offices, but Monterey County had yet to authorize such an entity.
