Jared Blumenfeld of Belvedere, the former president of Laurene Powell Jobs’ $3.5 billion primary climate fund, has been appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to the State Water Resources Control Board.

Blumenfeld was director of the San Francisco Environment Department under Mayor Willie Brown. He was later the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s western regional administrator and secretary for environmental protection in the Newsom administration.

Blumenfeld was president of Jobs’ Waverley Street Foundation from 2022 to 2026. The fund aims to address the climate crisis by supporting community-level solutions and underserved populations.

Before government service, Blumenfeld was director of Global Habitat Protection for the International Fund for Animal Welfare and director of Earth Summit Watch for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

He holds a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a bachelor’s degree from University of College London.

Blumenfeld, whose appointment was announced Friday, is expected to join the board that sets Russian River flow rules and oversees the Eel River/Potter Valley dam-removal and water-rights process.

The position pays $186,271 and requires Senate confirmation. He’s a Democrat.
