Hayward city councilmembers learned more this week about plans from a private jet storage and fuel company to increase its capacity at Hayward by building a new, nearly 40,000-square-foot hangar.
The facility will bring badly needed relief to local aviators looking for rare hangar space in the Bay Area, according to a city staff report received by the city council at its regular meeting Tuesday night.
The move could also bring in an additional roughly $43,000 a year in revenue for the city in fuel fees, according to the report.
APP Jet Center supplies jet fuel and provides hangar space for locally based aviation companies and individuals, as well as visitors to the Bay Area.
It hosts companies that operate flight schools, private jet charters, helicopter sightseeing tours and more, according to the airport’s website.
The company began operating at the city-owned airport on Skywest Drive in 2005 and leases about 140,000 square feet for hangars, a terminal and office space, according to a city staff report received by the council at its regular meeting Tuesday.
The construction of the 39,900-square-foot hangar would take place on land it already leases and is scheduled to start sometime this year if needed permits are approved.
A company spokesperson did not return a request for comment about the project Tuesday evening.
APP Jet Center is categorized by the airport as a Fixed Base Operator, or FBO, which primarily sells fuel and offers hangar space but does not operate aircraft, according to the city staff report.
The company was acquired by Bain Capital in March. It also operates locations in Denver, South Florida, and Washington, D.C., according to its website.
The company last expanded its hangar space with a $5 million buildout in 2016 that included a new terminal.
Available hangar space in the Bay Area is hard to come by.
Hayward Executive Airport has 206 hangars, but all are full. Palo Alto, Half Moon Bay, San Carlos, and Reid-Hillview airports all have competitive waitlists, according to their websites.
