Frontier Airlines is returning to Oakland this summer with its first nonstop flights operating to Las Vegas.
The Denver, Colorado-based budget airline is expanding at its hub at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas by offering 11 weekly flights to Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport, beginning Aug. 20 at a fare starting at $49.
The announcement comes after fellow low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines announced its bankruptcy earlier this year. Spirit did not operate from Oakland at the time operations ceased, but Frontier executives at the company’s latest earnings call said they would seize the opportunity and expand service across the country.
“Spirit’s exit meaningfully alters the supply landscape,” said Frontier Chief Executive Officer James Dempsey on the May 2 earnings call. “Given our network, low-cost structure, and disciplined approach to capacity deployment, a manner consistent with our strategic priorities around network shape and long-term value creation.”
Josh Flyr is the vice president of network and operations design at Frontier and is tasked with analyzing the airline’s route network to find places to expand or cut back. He said the airline is delighted to offer “high-value travel” to Bay Area residents and those connecting through the hub.
“We are laser-focused on redefining what consumers can expect from low-fare travel — from our expansive network map to the premium upgrades we offer — and we look forward to welcoming passengers back on board at OAK this summer,” said Flyr in a press release.
Oakland airport officials were also excited to welcome a new carrier to their portfolio — which currently includes regular service by Alaska, Allegiant, Delta, Hawaiian, Southwest, Viva, and Volaris. The airline ceased operations at OAK in 2023.
“We’re proud Frontier has returned to OAK with service linking Oakland and Las Vegas,” said Craig Simon, Director of Aviation for the Port of Oakland. “OAK offers a quick and seamless experience for travelers, and we’re pleased to offer expanded flight options for those traveling between the Bay Area and Las Vegas.”
Just across the Bay, Frontier has flown from San Francisco International Airport since 1997 and currently flies to 11 cities across the country. The airline did not indicate whether the return to Oakland marks an effort to reduce costs associated with flying into SFO.
