Only a few hundred votes separated the two candidates vying to be the next San Mateo County superintendent of schools after early results came in Tuesday night.
Chelsea Bonini, a trustee on the San Mateo County Board of Education, is leading the race with about 50.5% of the votes so far. Her opponent, Hector Camacho, has 49.5%.
As of 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Bonini had around 600 more votes than Camacho.
Camacho is the San Mateo County Office of Education’s executive director of equity, social justice and inclusion. He’s received endorsements from numerous labor unions and local politicians including several San Mateo County supervisors and U.S. Rep. Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco.
Bonini has endorsements from dozens of teachers’ associations and educators.
The next round of updates to the results will be released sometime before Thursday afternoon. The San Mateo County Registration and Elections Division still needs to count ballots that were received in the mail or dropped off at vote centers and drop boxes after Friday, May 29.
