East Palo Alto has secured $2.6 million in federal funding for two projects aimed at improving public safety, infrastructure, and flood resilience, city officials announced last week.

The largest award, $2 million, will fund safety improvements along Woodland Avenue between University Avenue and Newell Road, according to city officials.

Planned upgrades include new sidewalks, ADA-accessible features, traffic-calming measures, pavement repairs, drainage improvements, and updated roadway signs and striping.

City officials said the project is intended to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, students, families, and motorists.

An additional $600,000 will support the San Francisquito Creek Floodway Study, which will examine flood risks and identify potential solutions to protect East Palo Alto and neighboring communities from future flooding, city officials noted.

The creek has a history of overflowing during major storms, causing damage to homes, businesses, and transportation infrastructure.

City officials said the study will help guide long-term efforts to strengthen flood protection and community resilience.
