San Francisco still has one of the best city park systems in the country, according to the latest national rankings released this week by a park advocacy nonprofit.

The ParkScore index by the nonprofit Trust for Public Land ranked San Francisco sixth in the nation among the 100 most populous U.S. cities, the same as last year’s rankings. Washington, D.C., had the highest ParkScore, while Irvine in Southern California finished second.

San Francisco had the best ranking in the Bay Area, while Oakland and Fremont tied for 43rd nationally and San Jose was 49th. Stockton was ranked 80th. The index is based on five factors: access, equity, acreage, investment, and amenities.

The Trust for Public Land noted that 100% of San Francisco residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park and the city’s spending of $476 per resident on parks was second in the nation for investment, though the index dinged the city because of the small size of its parks, with a median size of 1.3 acres.

The full rankings and more information can be found on the TPL website.
