A Florida-based equipment rental company agreed to pay roughly $245,000 in civil penalties to resolve accusations that it violated state environmental laws when it failed to fix a pair of broken oil containment systems in a timely manner, according to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office.
Herc Rentals Inc., which rents a range of heavy equipment and tools for construction and emergency management, was accused of violating the state’s laws and regulations related to the underground storage of hazardous substances, the DA’s office said in a news release.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.
Sonoma County District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in her statement that the company was cooperative with the investigation and addressed the problem by replacing the faulty oil tank once the DA’s office got involved.
The company was allegedly notified by the Fire Prevention and Hazardous Materials Division of Permit Sonoma that there was a problem with an oil sump — which is a pan or reservoir to catch oil–and a secondary containment system, but the company failed to fix the problem within the timeframe required.Â
The issue was found at the company’s facility at 5500 Commerce Blvd., in Rohnert Park.
The stipulated judgement also established an injunction prohibiting the company from violating state environmental laws related to underground storage of hazardous materials, according to the DA’s office.
