City officials in Berkeley are urging students, tenants, and landlords to properly dispose of unwanted items during the summer move-out season to help keep streets clean and safe.

The city warned that illegally dumping mattresses, furniture, and other debris on sidewalks is prohibited and can result in fines of up to $500 per day. Properties with repeated violations could face increased penalties.

Berkeley city officials encouraged residents to plan ahead by using city services, including bulky waste pickups, mattress recycling programs, and prepaid trash bags available through the Berkeley Transfer Station.

The city also highlighted donation and recycling options for reusable goods, electronics, textiles, and hazardous waste.

A cooperative reuse program at University of California, Berkeley’s Clark Kerr Campus will accept mattresses, furniture, e-waste, and bicycles from students and staff from May 22 through May 31.

Residents who witness illegal dumping are encouraged to report it through the city’s 311 system or online reporting tools.
