A new paved parking lot has opened along Highway 1 near Panther Beach, expanding public access to the North Coast ahead of a larger trail project’s completion, transport officials said.
The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission announced Monday the opening as part of the ongoing North Coast Rail Trail project, which will eventually create a 7.5-mile multi-use path between Wilder Ranch and Davenport.
The Panther Beach parking area includes accessible spaces, bike racks, benches, and restroom facilities, according to SCCRT.
Some amenities are still under construction and are expected to be completed later this month, the commission said.
“By opening the parking lot and restroom facilities ahead of the full trail completion, the RTC aims to enhance public access and convenience while progress continues on construction of the entire North Coast Rail Trail,” said RTC Executive Director Sarah Christensen.
The North Coast Rail Trail is designed to provide a car-free route for cyclists and pedestrians, connecting coastal destinations and scenic areas, a press release noted.
Once finished, it will become part of a planned 32-mile Coastal Rail Trail spanning Santa Cruz County.
Transportation officials said future plans include a pedestrian overcrossing of Highway 1 to connect the trail to Cotoni Coast Dairies National Monument, with construction expected to begin in 2028.
