Authorities confirmed Thursday that a shark attack was the cause of death for a Pebble Beach woman who disappeared while swimming near a Pacific Grove beach last month.

Erica Fox, 55, had been reported missing Dec. 21 after a suspected shark attack while swimming off Lovers Point in Monterey County.

Her body was found Dec. 27 in the ocean south of Davenport Beach in Santa Cruz County.

The coroner’s office determined the cause of death to be “sharp and blunt force injuries and submersion in water due to a shark attack,” the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said.

“The Sheriff’s Office once again extends its deepest condolences to Erica Fox’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said.
