Lincoln Park Playground in San Francisco’s Richmond District has reopened with new play equipment and safety surfacing, seven months after an arson fire caused major damage, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced.
The playground was heavily damaged in May when an arsonist set fire to the site, destroying the main play structure, safety surfacing and several nearby trees, park officials said.
The department’s operations team began planning repairs soon after, with construction starting in October.
The rebuilt playground, located on the southeastern edge of the 100-acre Lincoln Park, now includes a new play structure with a tower, slides, and climbing features, along with new safety surfacing and landscaping.
“San Francisco’s parks bring people together and strengthen our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Daniel Lurie. “I’m thrilled we’re reopening Lincoln Park Playground and giving Richmond District families another safe, welcoming place to play.”
The $600,000 project was funded through the department’s deferred maintenance budget and completed under the city’s Playground Renewal Program, which uses cooperative purchasing agreements to reduce costs and speed up construction, a press release issued Friday noted.
