Hayward officials have appointed a 20-year veteran firefighter to serve as the new chief of the city’s Fire Department.

Ryan Hamre will take over the role from Eric Vollmer. Vollmer became interim fire chief after former fire chief Garrett Contreras retired in June 2024, city officials said.

Hamre, who joined the Hayward Fire Department 20 years ago, has worked his way through the ranks, serving as a firefighter, apparatus operator, captain, battalion chief, and deputy chief.

As the new Fire Chief, he will oversee fire suppression and emergency response efforts for Hayward as well as the Fairview Fire Protection District.

The Fairview Fire Protection District is an independent Special District that contracts with the City of Hayward for fire protection and emergency medical services within the District, which includes the unincorporated areas of Fairview and Five Canyons.
