San Francisco police have announced a virtual town hall meeting that will be held Friday to provide updates on the investigation into a shooting by an officer that injured a man who was walking on U.S. Highway 101 allegedly with a weapon last week.
The shooting occurred after officers responded around 11:20 a.m. last Thursday to the area of northbound Highway 101 near Cesar Chavez Street to assist San Francisco sheriff’s deputies with a man who was walking on the freeway, according to police.
Authorities made contact with the man near the Cesar Chavez Street off-ramp and “during the encounter, the subject produced an edged weapon, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said in a statement later that day.
The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital and police did not immediately provide an update on his condition. No one else was injured, and the name of the officer who shot the man was also not immediately available.
Police said they will share more details about the case at the virtual town hall planned for 3 p.m. Friday at sfgovtv.org/SFPDTownhall. Members of the public can call (415) 655-0001 and provide access code 266 148 33471 to offer public comment or ask a question.
SFPD policy is to typically hold a town hall within 10 days of an officer-involved shooting. The case is being investigated by SFPD, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, and the city’s Department of Police Accountability.
