Napa County officials are warning residents about a recent phishing scam involving fraudulent emails impersonating county departments and staff.
According to the officials, the emails request wire transfers or payments for permits or applications and may appear legitimate at first glance.
The county urges residents to verify email addresses carefully. Official messages will always come from an address ending in @countyofnapa.org, not generic domains like @usa.com.Â
Residents are advised to avoid sending payments or personal information via email. Never share personal info like passwords, Social Security numbers, or bank details.
These fraudulent emails may contain urgent messages as scammers often try to scare victims into acting fast, the county noted.Â
To stay safe, officials recommend watching for suspicious links, grammatical errors, and unsolicited offers that seem too good to be true.
Anyone who receives a suspicious message is encouraged to report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.Â
