Stockton officials are preparing to break ground this week on upcoming improvements to the city’s animal shelter.

A ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Animal Shelter facility at 1575 S. Lincoln St., city officials said. The public is invited to attend.

“The city of Stockton has grown tremendously over the last decade, and the needs of our animal shelter have grown with us,” Mayor Kevin Lincoln said in a statement.

“This project will increase capacity, amenities, and services offered to our animals and families. In addition to upgrading the existing facility to improve conditions, the new building will include a cattery, medical facilities, animal isolation and rehabilitation areas, staff offices, restrooms, and conference room space.”

The project also includes a new facade on the current building, remodeling of the modular buildings, communications network upgrades, power supply and generator upgrades and a new freezer.

Swatt Miers Architects of Emeryville completed the project design and plans in June under a $712,809 contract, according to city officials. A $10,473,000 construction contract has been awarded to F&H Construction of Lodi, according to city officials.

UNICO Engineering of Folsom has been awarded the construction management contract of $708,411, city officials said. Construction is expected to be completed in fall of 2026.

It currently operates with 18 full-time employees and 30 contract and volunteers, providing care and treatment for up to 10,000 animals annually.
