Do you rely on Crow Canyon Road as a trusty alternative to the freeway when you’re traveling between Castro Valley and San Ramon? You’ll probably want to find another route, at least through this summer.

As part of a three-year project to repair and improve the mountainous road, Alameda County Public Works Agency crews began closing portions of Crow Canyon Road to through traffic on April 11 between mile marker 5.25 and Bollinger Canyon Road at the county line. Local traffic only will be permitted access during the closure, which will take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through August. Drivers may encounter delays of up to 10 minutes.

This is the third phase of the project, which began in December 2021 with resurfacing and safety improvements, and continued in September 2022 with storm damage repairs. The current phase will involve reconstruction and replacement of three cross culverts, the Public Works Agency said.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said drivers should avoid the area during closure hours and it is recommended that motorists traveling between Castro Valley and San Ramon take Interstates 580 or 680 instead.
