Ted Hearne’s one-act oratorio, “Place,” co-created with director Patricia McGregor and featuring a libretto by poet Saul Williams, explores issues of colonialism, dislocation and separation, police violence and Afrofuturism. With six vocalists and an 18-member chamber ensemble in a score that encompasses electronic music, rhythm and blues, and chamber ensemble, the show — a 2021 Pulitzer Prize nominee — makes its West Coast premiere this weekend as part of Cal Performances’ 2021-2022 “Illuminations: Place and Displacement” series.
