A new program will allow most Oakland residents to schedule a pick-up or drop-off of large, unwanted items in order to help the city combat illegal dumping.

Starting Nov. 15, people who rent apartments or single-family homes can schedule a free “bulky” item pick-up or drop-off themselves, rather than being required to go through property owners or managers, according to a news release from by Waste Management of Alameda County, Inc.

The program allows people “to dispose of up to four cubic yards of bulky items such as furniture, scrap metal, small consumer electronics, cardboard, extra landscape trimmings and other trash,” according to the company.

Also, curbside pick-ups allow people to get rid of items larger than four cubic yards, including tires, carpets, mattresses, box springs, large appliances, televisions, computer monitors and other electronics, the company said.

Oakland residents can schedule a bulky item drop-off at Waste Management’s Davis Street facility or a curbside pick-up by calling 1-888-WM-Bulky.

Residents can also visit the Oakland Recycles website to learn more about the new program.
