Silicon Valley residents were filling out their census responses at a slightly higher rate than residents of other Bay Area counties.

San Mateo County’s self-response rate to census online, by phone or by mail was 65.4 percent. In Santa Clara County, the rate was 64.9 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Here’s how the counties rank by the percentage of households who have responded online, by phone or by mail, to the census as of April 29.

Overall, the response in the Bay Area “looks really good,” said Jeffrey Enos, deputy regional director for the Los Angeles region of the U.S. Census Bureau.

He attributed much of the strong response to the Census Bureau’s partners, including local governments officials, business leaders, nonprofits and other organizations that got the word out about how important the census is.

“They’re the local trusted voices,” Enos said.

Statewide, the self-response rate as of April 29 was 56 percent and nationwide, 54.6 percent. The deadline for responding to the 2020 census is Oct. 31.
