The City of Palo Alto has opened the Bryant Street Community Center, a newly renovated downtown facility designed to serve residents of all ages through recreation programs, teen activities, and senior services, city officials announced early this month.
The city invested $1.3 million to transform the former private gym into a community hub featuring gathering spaces, classrooms, a teen center, and a permanent downtown home for La Comida, a senior meal program that has served local residents for more than 53 years, city officials said.
“Bryant Street Community Center reflects the City’s commitment to fostering community wellness and belonging through the renovation of an unutilized space into something amazing for us to continue programs like senior meal services that our community relies on and a new hub for teens created by teens improving community connection and wellbeing,” said Palo Alto Vice Mayor Greer Stone.
The teen center was designed with input from local youth and includes a mural created by teens, according to city officials.
La Comida now provides weekday lunch service at the center, offering seniors both meals and social opportunities. The facility also is expected to serve as an overnight warming location during colder months when activated under county guidelines, Palo Alto officials said.
City officials said additional improvements, including further electrification upgrades and expanded community-use spaces, are being considered for the future.
