The San Francisco Police Department has announced plans to hold a virtual town hall meeting next week to discuss a shooting that seriously injured an officer last weekend.
The meeting is planned for 3 p.m. Tuesday and will be streamed live to provide an update on the shooting that occurred Sunday, May 31, in the city’s Bayview District after a pursuit.
Norris Reed III is accused of shooting at two officers, striking one of them, in the area of Bayshore Boulevard and Costa Street after his vehicle was flagged by automatic license plate readers on the Bay Bridge as allegedly being involved in a recent armed robbery, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
Reed, 36, of Oakland, faces two counts of attempted murder and other charges.
The officer hit by the gunfire, Ofc. Brittney Taylor, underwent emergency surgery on Monday and was in serious but stable condition as of later this week, according to Sam Singer, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Officers Association.
Police said Reed was accused of shooting at officers when he opened the door to his vehicle after crashing. A passenger in the vehicle was shot by officers who returned fire and was hospitalized in critical condition, according to police.
At next week’s meeting, a presentation by SFPD command staff will be followed by a period for people to provide public comment. People can call (415) 665-0001 and use access code 266 267 67526 to join.
As part of SFPD policy, the department typically holds a town hall meeting within 10 days after a shooting involving its officers.
