The Emeryville Police Department is conducting a traffic enforcement campaign this month focused on drivers suspected of violating California’s hands-free cell phone law.
The enforcement operation is scheduled for April 6 through April 13, police said.
Under state law, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or other electronic communications device while operating a vehicle, including while talking, texting, or using apps.
Violations can result in a fine, and a second offense within 36 months of a prior conviction can add a point to a driver’s record, according to the authorities.
Police urged motorists to pull over to a safe location if they need to make a call or enter directions and to silence or store phones out of reach before driving.
