A man from Washington State is behind bars in connection with a shooting on Super Bowl Sunday that injured six people in downtown San Jose, police said Monday.
Tyrone Asphy is suspected of pulling a gun during a fight between two groups about 10:50 p.m. on Feb. 8, near the intersection of Santa Clara and Market streets.
San Jose police said Asphy, 46, allegedly fled after he shot six people during the fight. Five victims were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and another was treated at the scene.
Detectives tracked Asphy down by using a license plate reader to identify the suspect’s vehicle. A resident of Federal Way in Washington, Asphy was in town for the Super Bowl, police said.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Asphy and a search warrant for his home. Working with the FBI and the Federal Way Police Department, investigators found the suspect had fled back to Washington state after the shooting.
Asphy was arrested on March 11 at his home and booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.
A gun allegedly found at his home was used in the Feb. 8 shooting in San Jose, police said.
“On a day that should have been a celebration, a dangerous suspect from out of state chose to bring violence into downtown San Jose and attempted to take multiple lives,” San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph said. “He fled back to his home state, but fleeing will not put distance between him and the consequences of his actions.”
