Dash cameras geared for artificial intelligence will be added to 235 SamTrans buses in a bid to reduce collisions and improve safety, the San Mateo County Transit District said Friday.
The SamTrans Board of Directors has approved a contract with San Francisco-based Samsara Inc. to provide AI dash cameras that face both the street and the bus driver.
The cameras are intended to spot unsafe driving, review incidents and aid training, the district said in a press release.
“Using AI technology, the cameras can detect risky conditions and trigger alerts that help improve driving awareness while also capturing video that can be used for safety analysis and operator coaching,” according to the district.
Samsara will provide hardware, software, installation, training and cloud-based video services for three years at a cost of $240,000, the district said. The contract has an option for up to three one-year extensions totaling up to $240,000.
